WHITE SPACE an instrument of light you play together
Premiere 23 October 2026 · ADE Arts & Culture · ICK Dans Amsterdam · info · tickets
At its heart, a monolith of intense blue and white light turns on its axis, sweeping its surroundings like the playhead of a sequencer. Everyone it passes becomes part of the composition: their pose is both the note that sounds and the pattern of light around them. There is nothing to wear or touch; the body is all it takes to play.
When players hold the same pose, the instrument answers: light fills the space between them, transforming negative space into WHITE SPACE. What follows is a playground of light and sound. With their bodies, players shape compositions of monochromatic light and generative music that shift and dance among them.
WHITE SPACE brings together the 3 main elements of Oostrik's earlier work: the spatial presence of his light sculptures; the layered interactivity of his screen-based installations; and the explorations of human synchrony he made with the Harmonic Dissonance Collective. Captured in a single line of light and 2 colours: maximum interaction with minimal means.
Composer Marcel Wierckx created the generative music, drawing on his vast experience in audiovisual composition and live electronics. A close collaborator throughout, he also helped shape the interaction and the concept. The ingenious technicians of Yens & Yens engineered the spinning monolith: the idea is simple, the technology behind it anything but. And the research of neuroscientist Suzanne Dikker into human synchrony has been a lasting source of inspiration.
